7 reasons why Brockley is absolutely the best area of London to live in

More and more people are flocking to a little-known neighbourhood nestled in the trifecta of Lewisham, New Cross and Peckham.

Over the last decade, Brockley has really come into its own and those that live there champion it - and for good reason.

Not only are there lovely open green spaces, such as Hilly Fields Park and Ladywell Cemetery, but there's also a multitude of independent shops, like grocer's Jones of Brockley, and gorgeous cafés, such as Arlo and Moe.

But the food and drink options extend way beyond cafés; Brockley is home to some stellar pubs, bars and restaurants, including what is arguably the best burger in London.

Or, if you fancy something a little more casual, there’s always the award-winning chippy Brockley's Rock, although you might have to queue on a Friday night.

On Saturdays, you’ll also find Brockley Market, one of south London’s busiest and best food markets.

Then why not spend the night at the iconic Rivoli Ballroom, a venue so steeped in history it's the closest a Londoner can come to time travel.

1. Rivoli Ballroom

The Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley is like a time capsule hidden in the depths of south-east London.

Inside, the ballroom comprises an eclectic mix of neo-classical, Deco and oriental motifs set within an exotic and luxuriant decorative scheme mainly dating from the 1950s.

As soon as lockdown permits, we recommend you dance the night away and enjoy the tunes of the resident rock & roll, jive and swing bands.

2. Jones of Brockley

Jones of Brockley is a beloved family-run grocer's opposite Crofton Park station.

They stock a broad range of delicious and well-made products including bread, cheese, vegetables, refrigerated and dry goods, wine, beer and much more.

Jones has also just launched an online shop which you can check out here

3. London Beer Dispensary

This bar without the physical barrier of a bar offers punters a wide selection of locally-brewed beer.

Not only that but they can lay claim to serving some of the tastiest burgers in London.

You can even have a Chocolate flavoured stout!

4. Brockley's Rock

Popular Lewisham fish and chip shop, Brockley’s Rock really is a different kettle of fish.

The family-owned business, which boasts calamari, salmon and tiger prawns on its menu is also one of 60 nominees for the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award.

Brockley’s Rock is no small-fry; if you don’t mind a bit of queue, then the food and friendly staff are well worth the wait.

5. Hillyfields

Hillyfields is a delightful park that boasts panoramic views of London from the comfort of a family-friendly neighbourhood.

There's the park run on Saturday morning as well as cricket and football teams to join.

The playground offers hours of fun for kids and the nearby coffee shop and tennis courts are a great way for friends to reconnect after lockdown.

6. Brockley Barge

The Brockley Barge has built up a reputation as being one of the best Wetherspoons in London.

With typical Spoons prices, this pub appeals to local legends and cash-strapped students alike, and everyone gets along merrily.

Good luck finding a table though.

7. Brockley Market

Award-winning Brockley Market is a terrific place to pick up some top-notch grub.

The focus is on locally sourced food, whether that’s a joint for your Sunday lunch, fresh fish, fruit and veg, or cakes and treats.

There are loads of street food stalls to offset your hunger, and the vibe is lively and friendly too.
