Craig Boone Obituary, VDOT Safety Worker Struck And Killed While Assisting Motorist On I-64 Identifi

Craig Boone Obituary, Death- We mourn the loss of Mr. Craig Boone, a VDOT Safety Support Worker, who died helping a motorist early Sunday morning. The world lost Craig too young, but his selflessness and dedication to safety will live on.

A tragic I-64 accident near Hampton claimed Craig’s life. Virginia State Police received a worrisome call about a two-vehicle incident on eastbound I-64 at the Big Bethel overpass at 1:15 a.m. They arrived to find a vehicle had hit a VDOT Safety Service Patrol (SSP) truck and horribly hit Craig Boone, who was outside the vehicle.

Craig Boone, 52, was a caring and hardworking man who spent his career serving others. He was a brilliant example of someone who placed others’ safety first. On that tragic night, he was helping a stranded motorist with the VDOT service van properly positioned on the right shoulder and its arrow board illuminated to assure road safety.

As Craig was performing his duty, 27-year-old Yorktown resident Alana F. Diomande’s 2020 Jeep Latitude drove off the road onto the right shoulder and hit the Ford truck, killing Craig. We regret to inform you that Ms. Diomande was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Due to intoxication, she declined at the scene and was transported for blood withdrawal. Craig’s sudden death is being investigated. Ms. Diomande faces DUI, involuntary manslaughter, obstruction, and cursing and abuse charges, reflecting the severity of the case.

All who knew Craig Boone will be inspired by his dedication as a VDOT Safety Support Worker and his kindness in helping others. His legacy and impact on our community will go on. Craig’s family, friends, and coworkers will remember him as kind and loyal. We pray for his family during this trying time.

The memorial service for Craig will be place,Instead of flowers, the family prefers donations to Charity/Organization in honor of Craig’s safety and service. As we grieve Craig Boone, let us emphasize road safety and remain cautious against drunk driving. His legacy should encourage us to look out for each other in life.
