Frances Mayes is a poet, memoirist, essayist, and novelist who teaches at a university in the United States.Mayes was born and reared in Fitzgerald, Georgia, and went on to study at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, before earning her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Florida. It was at San Francisco State University that she received her MA degree in 1975, and it was there that she rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Creative Writing, the head of the Poetry Center, and the chair of the Department of Creative Writing. Mayes has produced a number of works of poetry, including Climbing Aconcagua (1977), Sunday in Another Country (1977), After Such Pleasures (1979), The Arts of Fire (1982), Hours (1984), and Ex Voto (1985). Climbing Aconcagua is one of his most well-known works of poetry (1995). Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy was released in 1996, and it was her first book. Buying and refurbishing an abandoned home in rural Cortona in the Tuscany area of Italy and living there for a year is the subject of this memoir written by author Mayes. It debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list and stayed at the top of the chart for more than two years after that. The film Under the Tuscan Sun, which was released in 2003, was a critical and commercial success. The film, directed by Audrey Wells and largely based on Mayes’ novel, was adapted for the screen by the director. Mayes followed up on this literary triumph with another worldwide bestseller, Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy, in 1999, and another literary hit, In Tuscany, the following year. ‘Swan’ was Mayes’ debut book, which was released in 2002. In 2004, she collaborated with photographer Steven Rothfeld and her husband Edward Kleinschmidt Mayes to create the phototext Bringing Tuscany Home, which was a collaboration between the two. June Mayes, who is also a food and travel writer, served as the editor of The Best American Travel Writing 2002, and she and her husband travelled around the world in their book A Year in the World: Journeys of a Passionate Traveller (2006), which recounted their travels in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Morocco, and other places. The author and her poet husband now live in two places: Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Cortona, Italy. She is the artistic director of the annual Tuscan Sun Festival, which takes place in Cortona every summer.
